Coke - Inquiry based learning for high school chemistry Shoshanaleffler

Students really enjoy exploring whether coke or diet coke has higher density. A bonus activity is using density to determine if a gold penny is real or fake.

Regents Standards

-Density

3.1w Elements can be differentiated by physical properties. Physical properties of substances, such as density, conductivity, malleability, solubility, and hardness, differ among elements.

-Designing an experiment

Standard 7. Key idea 1.

1.4

Explain and evaluate phenomena mathematically and scientifically by formulating a testable hypothesis, demonstrating the logical connections between the scientific concepts guiding the hypothesis and the design of an experiment, applying and inquiring into the mathematical ideas relating to investigation of phenomena, and using (and if needed, designing) technological tools and procedures to assist in the investigation and in the communication of results. • design an experiment that requires the use of a mathematical concept to solve a scientific problem, e.g., an experiment to compare the density of different types of soda pop
